Job Description

You own the system design and assure requirements compliance

You will be part of our highly skilled and enthusiastic Development & Engineering
team, working at the forefront of integrated photonics sensing technology. As a
System Engineer, you are the key player in the entire development trajectory, from
start to end. You gain in-depth knowledge of all PhotonFirst hardware and software
products. You have the ability to translate technology roadmap topics combined
with user application needs into innovative and efficient system architectures. You
understand the individual building blocks our systems consist of, and you’re
proficient in reconfiguring the electrical and optical interfaces in order to come to
new solutions. You take ownership of requirements traceability and compliance

The development and engineering team works hand-in-hand with the research and
application development teams to come to an innovative and high-quality solution
for the end customer. Your role in this deep-tech environment will consist of:

• Taking the lead in the design of comprehensive systems and component
architectures and guiding the development teams to come to a complete
solution for our customers.
• Understanding of and contributing to the technology roadmap and
integrating new technologies into ongoing developments.
• Assisting the Application Development Engineer in translating user application
needs to comprehensive system requirements, using your strong analytical
• The ability to build and maintain effective networks across the community
including customer and/or supplier liaison experience for technical aspects,
verifying and obtaining an agreement that customer needs are satisfied.
• Writing and reviewing technical product documentation and qualification
• Assuring requirements traceability through the entire development process,
from specification to qualification whilst making use of best practice systems
lifecycle processes alongside techniques such as Learn First and Agile

Direct reporting line
The System Engineer reports to the Team Lead of Development & Engineering.

• University (WO) or University of Applied Science (HBO) degree in Systems-,
Mechanical-, Electrical- or Aerospace Engineering, or Informatics.
• You are an assertive team player and take ownership of projects assigned to
• You have 5 or more years of experience as a System Engineer, Architect or
Lead Development Engineer.
• Proven experience developing systems in relevant integrated photonics
sensing product markets and/or domains, such as control systems, real-time
displays or other safety-related systems, containing multiple technical
disciplines such as electronics, mechanics, optics and/or software.
• The ability to work with little guidance and make sound strategic decisions
whilst collaborating to ensure the team understands, co-operates and
supports those decisions, taking responsibility for collaborative technical work
package execution and associated outcomes.
• You have experience with the design of electronics (PCBAs).
• You have an affinity with embedded electronics and interface design.
• You have experience with a professional quality management system:
structured system development according to a process, document revision
control, requirements traceability and compliance management.
• Excellent communicator in English, both verbally, in writing and in presenting.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).

• Experience with (optical) physics.
• Experience with PCBA design for embedded electronics

Since this is a new job in a fast-growing company, we prefer a full-time commitment
but 32 hours is an option. You work from our Alkmaar headquarters.
